Obituary

Post by mr.shoes » Fri 21 Sep, 2007 6:51 pm

I have just started my weekend by burying my girlfriend's guinea pig, Ernie, in our back garden.

As pets go, Ernie was a disappointment. On our first meeting, a full three years ago, he urinated on my lap. Our relationship failed to blossom through time. When i came within three feet of his hutch, he'd run and hide under a mound of straw.
But despite the frostiness of our time together, a respect grew between us. I earned his respect by leaving bits of cucumber in his hutch. At Christmas, I'd stretch to an apple. I'm that kind of festive person.
He earned my respect for his rebellious streak, his complete refusal to conform to the stereotype of a family pet.

You never met Ernie, and never knew Ernie, but tonight Ernie rests in a hastily dug hole in my garden, a crude bamboo crucifix marking his eternal resting place.

Raise a glass to Ernie, and spare a thought for his partner in crime Bert, who now lives in a far lonelier hutch.
* My lawyers have asked me to clarify, no concrete evidence has been produced to suggest Bert & Ernie were ever involved in any criminal wrong-doing. How they acquired the holiday home in Barbados remains a mystery.
