Forum upgrade

Post by ben » Sun 25 Jun, 2006 12:45 am

Evening,

I've been toying with the idea of upgrading our forum software to vBulletin - possibly the slickest of all web forum software. However, a license for vbulletin costs 91 GB Pounds.

Now, some of our friends here have suggested that they would chip in a few pennies towards this cost. The question is, a) do you want to see better forum software and b) if yes, would you be willing to donate to the purchase?

FYI, I manage an existing site which runs vBulletin - feel free to have a browse at the sort of things we could do with it:

The googlemap plugins (in the navigation bar) are particularly neat.

What do you reckon?
Ben

Evening yourself.

I have a few questions.
BUT FIRST; man, your other site looks like the Taj Mahal, compared to this place.
Seriously, Ben, you must be shaking your head sometimes, when you go from the delighfull "This is very much a family social event - a chance for us to involve our partners and family in our A2 obessions", to "what's your porno name", or to Chuck Cogan's all time classic "Boogie In Your Butt"; sorry Chuck, but it is.....damn funny!

Well, once I picked myself up from the floor, in absolute amasment, after looking through your 'other' home, it wasn't long before I asked myself the following:-
1, What would be the main advantages of getting the new software?
2, If we did go ahead and purchase it, does everyone feel there would be enough need for it, and if yes, then would it be left to the fans around here to design it's color scheme etc; also, it's facilities; or would one person oversee the entire layout/functionality etc?

I would personally love to see this place grow, just the way it is, but I know in my heart that's not going to happen, and it may be time to look ahead.
On the other side of the coin, I'd also love to see a place where we could have really cool polls all the time (all listed and accounted for), and also a place for people to post their own images/tunes etc. Or are we simply talking more HD space for that kind of thing to happen, and not necessarily the design of a website.
I'm sorry guys, I know nothing about all of this kind of stuff, and as much as I love these pages, there's quite a big part of me that feels that it may now be time to move on, and more importantly, to spread our wings....

Finally, if we all do decide to go ahead, then how would you like the financial aspect of things to be taken care of? Could you just simply stick a Paypal button up somewhere. That would surely be the best option.

Thanks for the response Mista,
Well, once I picked myself up from the floor, in absolute amasment, after looking through your 'other' home, it wasn't long before I asked myself the following:-

The main advantage would be all the extras that we could add to the site without loads of work. I have been a long time supporter of phpBB (the software we use around here) - but it has its limitations. vBulletin has many clever features - and is much easier to customise that the current software.
On the other side of the coin, I'd also love to see a place where we could have really cool polls all the time (all listed and accounted for), and also a place for people to post their own images/tunes etc. Or are we simply talking more HD space for that kind of thing to happen, and not necessarily the design of a website.

This is all possible - even now - but would require time to integrate to make it look "reloadonline". If we used vBulletin - then we could pretty much use any of the free add-ons for it to cater for image galleries/audio links and such like. I have a reasonable amount of space on the server for extra storage (about 72Gb). That would allow for a small repository of tunes.

Finally, if we all do decide to go ahead, then how would you like the financial aspect of things to be taken care of? Could you just simply stick a Paypal button up somewhere. That would surely be the best option.
Paypal is fine - I have a full account setup (that I use for the 'other' site).

If you are technically minded, have a read of the features of vBulletin here:
