Volunteers sought

Post by ben » Tue 24 Mar, 2009 1:29 pm

Hi folks,

I'm looking for volunteers to get the new reloadonline site repopulated with news/articles/releases. You can take a peek at the new layout here:

http://www.reloadonline.com/dev

The plan is to keep the new site as clean and consistent as possible - so all images should be cropped/scaled to a consistent size. We'll use tagging and categories to classify the content. Categories will include things such as releases/news/reviews. Tags will be used to further refine the content - e.g. the various artist names will typically be setup as tags. I'm resisting turing it into a comprehensive list of every release (as discogs.com does this admirably already). Instead I suggest we have a post for each major release - and simply link to the appropriate discogs entry. News posts are likely to be of more interest.

Open to suggestions for any other improvements too.

Once we've got a respectable amount of content in - we'll switch this over as the new reloadonline homepage.

Ben

I would, but I'm seriously illiterate when it comes to anything with computers.
I will muck-in though, with anything other than programming.

The Wordpress system is pretty easy to use - it's no more complex that posting forum entries. I'll put together a mini-guide for uploading stuff later today and distribute to those that are interested. You can't do any damage - and as one of our strongest contributors, I'd frankly be pretty concerned if you weren't involved ;)

OK. I've setup accounts for you all. You should have received an e-mail with a randomly generated password. Feel free to change it to whatever you wish. I haven't found a good integration between the forum user accounts and wordpress - so we'll have to have the 2 accounts each for now.

Here's how to add a post:
  • Go to http://www.reloadonline.com/dev/wp-login.php
  • Login using your details
  • Click on New Post at the top of the page
  • Enter an appropriate title for the post
  • Enter the content for the post in the area below. Links can be inserted by selecting a bit of text and clicking on the link icon.
  • Enter tags as appropriate in the Tags section on the right hand side. Tags should describe artist names or any other suitable tagging. Try to be consistent with existing tags, and use proper case, i.e. Global Communication and not global communication.
  • Select the required categories from the list on the right hand side. These are manually maintained - but if you think we need new categories, drop me a PM.
To add an image to a post:
  • Whilst adding/editing a post, click on the "Add an Image" button - the first icon next to the Upload/Insert text
  • This will launch a new dialog box
  • Click on the Browser uploader button. This bit is important, as the default image uploader doesn't work reliably.
  • Select a local image (in PNG/JPG) format, cropped/scaled to 200x200, 400x400 or 600x600 (depending on how many grid units you want the post to occupy on the home page).
  • Click on Upload
  • Click on Save all changes. DO NOT CLICK ON "Insert into Post" - this will insert the image into the text, rather than attach the image to the post - you'll soon see why it looks wrong.
  • Close the image dialog
  • Click on the Publish button.
Feel free to try things out. Don't worry if it doesn't work as expected.

The most important thing to understand with the home-page template is that it automatically displays the latest posts in reading format, i.e. from left to right, top to bottom. The script automatically shuffles the order to fit around the size of the posts. The only way to influence the size of the post units is to change the size of the attached image. A 200x200 image uses 1 unit width; 400x400 uses 2 unit width; and 600x600 uses 3 unit width.

Any problems, drop me a PM or post them here.

There are the ones on the old home page. Otherwise it's gonna need a bit of time armed with google. I'm sure there are things in the forums we can harvest - links to reviews etc. If I can find a spare half hour I'll see what I can find. In the meantime I'm gonna switch the new site over - and archive the old one under http://www.reloadonline.com/old. Give me 10 mins...

Something that I would like to do is get snippets of all the tracks on the site. Perhaps just 30 second titbits to begin with - but later maybe look to hooking up with M&T and get some of the out-of-prints available as downloads.
