Original Global Communications 76 14 CD "rotting"

Hello,

I own the original CD of "76 14" from 1994 on Dedicated; I put it on yesterday for the first time in ages (because of all the hype about the re-release) and discovered that it doesn't want to play.

Turning the CD over I found that it's suffering from a kind of CD "rot" which has caused it to grow all sorts of pretty circular patterns at the edge of the CD under the clear layer.

I can't find Dedicated online, I presume that label has now vanished, so is there any way to get a replacement CD or do I have to shell out for the re-release?!

have you stored it where its damp or?

dont think you gonna get a replacement....but get the remasterd one...its worth it
or get the original on ebay...there seems to be plenty around these days

It's always been kept in the room with the rest of the CDs, normal room temperature.

I read an interesting article in a magazine about ten years ago stating that a lot of cheaper plastics from the far east were being used to manufacture a large proprtion of the world's CDs at the time.

Funnily enough, they said that such CDs would have a very limited shelf life (about ten years) before the plastic developed small, microscopic holes (rotting) making it impossible to read.

Perhaps you have become a victim of this - but buy the new version anyway, it's wicked!!

I always try and make backups of my fave music CDs as it costs very little and is worth it!

pretend the money you spend for it is going to the cd you don't yet have and it's like you didn't pay for 76:14 twice...

it seems to be highly prevelant on discs manufactured by pdo made in 1994-95.

most of the warp cds i bought around that time are effected :'(

I remember the article too. I think I saw it on TV but, and they were saying 'exactly' as above. CD's have been known, in the past, to rot themselves to death.
Everyone I know has suffered from this. I myself have had big issues with a 'Collection Of Short Stories'. I've kept it so safe and sound over they years, but put it on last summer, and all of a sudden, tracks were skippin all over the place. I cleaned it, played it in 2 other players, and still nothing. There's not a mark on it, but the little jobby just won't play.

I feel you pain man.

Yeah, one of my copies has a similar problem also, i think it was the limited cd that i had that was not playing. Bloody cds, i remember the tomorrows world when they put jam on a cd and it still played, bloody talking out there arses.

My copy of 76'14" was beginning to do something similar a few years ago, but I cleaned it with some CD polish and it removed the sort of 'frosted' effect and it played okay - so clearly it was only affecting the surface of the disc. I read somewhere that early 'digipack' and card-sleeve CDs were prone to this because the glue used gave off fumes that attacked the plastic of the CD. My 76'14" is the digipack version. Last time I looked at it it still seemed okay, but I intend to buy the reissue anyhow...

Thanks for the welcome, though I've actually been posting (irregularly) for a few years now, but at some point I forgot my log-in details and couldn't be bothered to set up another account...

'Air' reference? I wasn't aware of one, though I am a fan. The name comes from a Felt song title.
