GC REMASTERED FOR 2005

Postby mark p » Thu 16 Jun, 2005 10:18 pm

Just got back from remastering 76.14 and it has been a mission to say the least. Its probably taken me and John dent (Loud mastering) 3 days to get it sounding right and it took me over a day to find all the right versions.
But i'm pleased or infact delighted to say it sounds alot better than its ever sounded, mainly thanks to the amazing new valve analogue to digital converter that Johns just bought £6,000!!! Its the first time the cd master has come close to the vinyl.
And we also discovered a amusing error on the cd, it turns out that 76.14 was actually 76.17!!! and 9.39 is actually 9.37 on the original cd. So we have managed to correct the 9.39 error but it was impossible to make it 76.14. But we managed to put a text file so when you load the cd it comes up with 76.14
We remastered The Way and The Deep for a 12" and it was sounding amazing, it has the same vibe as the original 12" but its clearer and bigger sounding.
Cd 2 has All Remastered

1 The Groove (instrumental) - Global Communication
2 The Way - Global Communication
3 The Deep - Global Communication
4 Biosphere (Global Communication Rmx)
5 Incidental Harmony - Global Communication
6 Sublime Creation - Global Communication
7 Asprin - Sensorama - Global Communication Rmx

Cd 1 is 76.14 Remastered

There will be a Dbl vinyl of 76.14 and hopefully some of the other tracks from cd 2 on 12"s.

Not sure on release date i will keep you posted. Its coming out through sanctuary records. August/September ish??!!

what a nice treat..can't wait to hear it! not that the old version was lacking...

I wish there was a better (less lame) hidef format than sacd or dvda by now so this could get done up in better than cd quality.

GC REMASTERED FOR 2005

Postby edlad » Mon 20 Jun, 2005 1:50 pm

Only down side I see with this reissue (and there always has to be one, doesn't there?) is the lack of bonus material from the Maiden Voyage EP. "Funk In The Fridge" is an awesome tune, and deserves exposure to a larger audience. The remixes are also pretty good on the whole, and as the EP is hard to get these days, would be good to have seen it included.

That said, can't wait for the reissue of this truly epoch-defining piece of music!

The main problem that we have is that our tracks were so long back then that there isn't enough room on a cd to fit many on. Also there are licensing restrictions and we have to license the stuff through bmg which makes it financialy tricky to do a project like this.
The other weird thing is that out of all the gc tracks we did i hate funk in the fridge, i never liked it when we did it and when i checked it again it sounded really dated, but then again its the sax that probably grates with me. I really wanted the lamb remix on there but again licensing from major labels is expensive.
That said if this album goes well we are going to push to do a remotion part 2 and the chapterhouse remixes.
So fingers crossed

Is this correct???
Bit of an odd CD2 (IMHO)...
Don't get me wrong, all of them fantastic pieces of music, but after getting over my initial disapointment at the lack of anything 'new' (or, indeed, new!!) on the release, it did occur to me that Mark's original tracklist would make for nice listening more in keeping with 76.14. Or am i just missing the point about variety and spice...?

Well, I have to admit, I am in the same boat as you !
I don't know who the remastered CD is aimed at, because if it's 'already fans', did someone somewhere not sit and think that people who're into Tom & Mark's music, are usually people who once they've got a taste, through the course of time (and very quick time, as was my case), get just about everything there is ?
If, on the other hand it's new fans, then that's ok, but not putting anything new on either of the CD's, I feel is just a little more than dissapointing.

But, wait to you see, the answer will come back that the reason for the release, is to get all the selectees out, and very up to date (quality wise), when if truth be told, I'd listen to any of these tracks (and have done), in all sorts of varying qualities.

I guess, it's all about numbers again  !

I agree it's a shame that the original tracklisting has been replaced, and particularly so because I'm not a huge fan of the Jedi Knights stuff to be honest. From what has been said by Mark and Tom about the release, I can only assume (or hope) that this is a decision which they have been party to, otherwise it's a bit worrying.

Yeah; to be fare, it was said by Mr. Pritchard that licensing issues, more often than not played a part in these kind of escapades. I guess it's just down to those Majors !!
I just personally would have loved a couple of exclusives on there somewhere :?.

Ah, well !

I don't want to worry anyone but have you seen this story. Sanctuary is the parent company of Discotheque, which is the label releasing 76:14. Oh dear.

At 10p a share, it might be worth a punt - they do after have 3 of the top 5 singles this week but it sounds like a mountain of debt is quite likely to drag them under!
